While the Panthers struggled to get things going in the first quarter, the Tigers came out firing on all cylinders and slapped a pair of touchdowns on the board for a 14-0 lead. A barrage of points would be exchanged the remainder of the contest.
Permian’s first possession of the second quarter would lead to Mojo cutting into the deficit. A methodical 13-play, 99-yard scoring drive was capped by Juzstyce Lara’s short touchdown run to make it 14-7. Frenship immediately responded with a one play 70-yard TD strike, but the Black Cats answered with a 64-yard TD run by Isaac Herrera for a 21-14 tally.
The Tigers and Panthers would exchange touchdowns, which included a gadget play with Cayden Hernandez throwing a 20-yard TD pass to Gavin Black. Permian successfully converted a two-point attempt to leave the score 28-22 at the halftime break.
Fur would fly as the second half offered a catfight filled with a bevy of offensive assaults. The Black Cats took the opening drive of the third quarter 68 yards to paydirt, capped by a short TD pass to Isaiah Welton. A 59-yard touchdown run by Lara was negated by a holding penalty.
The Mojo defense forced a three-and-out on the following possession, but the punt return was fumbled and Frenship had new life at the Permian 28. Two plays later, the Tigers regained a slim 35-29 lead midway in the third. The Panthers reclaimed the lead by mounting a 10-play, 70-yard scoring drive with a heavy dose of Lara for a 36-35 advantage by quarter’s end.
Frenship added a touchdown early in the fourth, but Permian matched that with a 12-play, 74-yard drive. Lara reached paydirt on a 21-yarder for his third rushing TD of the night. Another successful two-point conversion gave the Panthers a 44-43 lead with five minutes left in the game.
The Tigers produced a drive that began on their won 30. Seven plays later, Frenship was threatening but the Mojo defense forced the effort to stall at the Permian 15. Facing a 4th-and-Goal, the Tigers made the 32-yard field goal with 2:32 left on the clock. The Panthers now trailed 46-44.
With time running out and no timeouts, the Black Cats had one last chance to answer. A short run, an incomplete pass, a penalty, and a sack had Permian facing a 4th-and-17 on its own 28. Another incomplete pass spelled defeat as a turnover-on-downs led to Frenship taking the victory formation snaps.
Lara finished the night with 248 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Permian (1-2, 4-4) will play host to San Angelo Central (0-3, 1-7) on October 27 at Ratliff Stadium. Time to Burn The Orange for Halloween!
