Permian Rallies Past Legacy

Midland, TX – There’s just something about Black Cats and Friday the 13th.  Midland Legacy experienced that magic as Permian rallied back to claim a 32-31 District 2-6A victory in Astound Broadband Stadium.

The Mojo Magic propelled the Black Cats through a 19-play, 89-yard scoring drive that ate up nine minutes of the fourth quarter.  Trailing by seven points, Permian pulled to within a point of the Rebels with just 10 ticks left on the clock.  Juzstyce Lara capped off the drive with a short touchdown run.

With three prior blocked extra point and field goal attempts in mind, head coach Jeff Ellison elected to go for the two-point conversion and win.  A pass from Jakob Garcia to Gage Murphy completed the come-from-behind victory.

The Panthers opened the game with a 7-play, 75-yard drive that was also capped by a Lara TD run.  The extra point attempt was blocked.  Legacy answered with a score of their own to take a 7-6 lead.  On the ensuing possession, Permian drove down the field but had a short field goal attempt blocked.

The Rebels extended that lead in the second quarter.  A 22-yard touchdown strike and 35-yard field goal left the Black Cats trailing 17-6 at the intermission.

After an exchange of three-and-outs to open the second half the magic began.  Legacy fumbled on a run to the right.  The loose pigskin was scooped up by Parker Haynes and returned 54 yards to cut the deficit to 17-12.  The conversion failed but breathed life into the momentum shift.

The Rebels responded with 11-play, 84-yard drive capped off with a 10-yard pass to establish a 24-12 difference.  Permian went back on the offensive.  Six plays later, Lara reached paydirt for the second time to make it an 18-14 ballgame.  The PAT attempt was once again blocked as the Panthers trailed by six by quarter’s end.

Taking over near midfield, Permian mounted a 4-play, 60-yard TD drive with Isaiah Welton pulling in an 8-yard TD pass to knot the game at 24-24.  Legacy wouldn’t go away and answered with a 4-play, 75-yard drive to regain a slim seven point lead.

The Black Cats chewed up the rest of the quarter on the game-winning drive.  Lara finished the night with 157 yards rushing and three touchdowns.  Permian (1-1, 4-3) will host Frenship (0-2, 5-2) back in Ratliff Stadium next Friday.
