Both teams entered the contest with matching 9-1 records. Both met for the first scrimmage of the season in Van Horn back in mid-August.
In this afternoon’s meeting, Pebble Hills scored the first 14 points of the game in the opening stanza. El Paso converted the opening kickoff into a short touchdown run. They followed that with a 3-yard TD pass late in the quarter.
The Panthers were able to get on the scoreboard in the second frame. Juzstyce Lara reached paydirt on a short touchdown run and again midway in the period on a 6-yard scamper. Pebble Hills added a touchdown and field goal to have Permian trailing 24-14 at the halftime break.
In the second half, it was the Spartans that controlled much of the third quarter, and it wasn’t until the fourth that Permian had a response. Jyzaiyah Solis hauled in a 15-yard pass from Rodney Hall, while JaQuan Richardson added a 4-yard TD catch midway into the final quarter.
Pebble Hills intercepted two Hall passes, while the Mojo defense found it difficult to keep the Spartans quarterback under wraps. Gael Ochoa threw for four touchdowns and ran for another one in the Permian loss.
The Panthers end the season 9-2 and still own a share of the District 2-6A title with Midland Legacy and Wolfforth Frenship. All three finished with 4-1 district records.
