Permian got on the scoreboard early with a 13-play, 75-yard opening drive, that was capped with a short Juzstyce Lara touchdown run. The Mojo defense got into the act when Deonte Bass intercepted a Legacy pass in the endzone the following possession.
A Permian fumble would set up Legacy at the 16. The Rebels converted the gift on the next play from scrimmage to knot the ballgame at 7-7. Another Permian miscue resulted in a safety to close out the first quarter with the Black Cats trailing 9-7.
The Panthers put together an 8-play, 52-yard drive with Terron Young reaching paydirt from seven yards out to regain the lead in the second quarter. The Black-and-White added a field goal as time ran out for an 18-9 halftime lead.
The Rebels utilized the opening drive of the second half to narrow the deficit to two points at 18-16. The Black Cats answered in response with a 31-yard JaQuan Richardson run to push the lead to 25-16. Legacy added another score in the third, and two unanswered TDs and a field goal in the fourth for the 33-25 Permian first loss of district and the 2022 season.
The Panthers (1-1, 6-1) will travel to Wolfforth for a date with Frenship (2-0, 6-1) next Friday. The Tigers claimed a 42-38 road win over Midland High (0-2, 4-3). Also in district action, San Angelo Central (2-0, 5-2) collected a 57-34 home decision over Odessa High (0-2, 3-4).
