The Panthers opened the game with a sustaining 11-play, 75-yard scoring drive, capped off with an 8-yard touchdown run by Josh Curry. The Black Cats and Eagles would exchange punts to fill the remainder of the first quarter.
Kayden Vickers hooked up with Dae Dae McDowell on a 62-yard strike to push the Mojo lead to 14-0 as the second stanza got underway. Abilene High answered with a 41-yard TD pass but missed the extra point for a 14-6 deficit. The Panthers extended the lead to 15 points on a 6-yard scamper by Curry, his second TD of the game.
The Eagles managed to add another touchdown pass late in the second frame. It would be the Black Cats that answered last as they took a 24-13 lead into the locker room, courtesy of a 41-yard field goal by Iker Munoz with just 11 ticks on the clock.
Munoz tacked on another three points in the third quarter, when he booted a 37-yarder through the uprights. Abilene High came back with a touchdown on a 21-yard TD pass to narrow the difference to 27-20 by quarter’s end.
Cayden Taylor gave Permian a 34-20 lead early in the fourth quarter. His 5-yard touchdown run capped off a 13-play, 72-yard offensive series. A bad snap resulted in a Mojo safety, which was followed by a 47-yard TD pass by the Eagles to cut the deficit to only five point at 34-29 with 3:19 remaining in the game.
The Panthers made sure there would be no comeback. Taking the ball near midfield, Permian would put together a 6-play, 51-yard touchdown drive to pound the final nail in Abilene’s coffin. Vickers connected with Zephaniah Deleon on a 13-yard TD pass to secure the 41-29 victory.
The penalty bug returned for the Panthers, committing eight penalties resulting in a loss of 68 yards. Permian produced 432 yards of total offense to Abilene’s 000. Curry scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, while Taylor rushed for another score. McDowell and Deleon each had a TD catch from Vickers, who finished the night 23-of-36 for 308 yards passing with two touchdowns.
With the victory, the Black Cats are the lone unbeaten team in district three weeks into the season. Permian will enjoy being back in the confines of Ratliff Stadium next Friday when Mojo hosts El Paso Pebble Hills at 7:00 p.m.
