Permian Picks Up Win In Waco

Waco, TX – Both Permian and Hewitt Midway entered the contest winless with 0-1 records for the 2023 season.  It would be the Black Cats from Odessa that would outlast the home Panthers in a 27-21 victory at Panther Stadium on Friday night.

A lone touchdown in the fourth quarter was enough to allow Permian to slap a mark in the win column.  A four-yard scamper by Juzstyce Lara capped off a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive.  The tally gave Mojo the go-ahead points after trailing 21-19 at the end of the third quarter.  Midway tried to rally back but the Permian defense denied that from happening.

Midway went on offense first to begin the evening, but the drive stalled at the Mojo 39.  Permian responded with a 7-play drive that ended in the endzone.  Isaac Herrera bulled his way across the goal line from two yards out for a 6-0 edge.  Waco roared right back on its second possession with an 8-play drive that was capped with a 22-yard TD strike for a 7-6 lead.

On the ensuing kick, Ben Saldivar reeled off a 51-yard return that set up the Permian offense on the Midway 32.  Jakob Garcia gave Mojo a 12-7 lead on a quarterback keeper early in the second frame.  The slim advantage would hold up into the intermission.

Permian extended the lead to 19-7 by putting together a 10-play, 78-yard drive capped again by a short QB sneak.  Midway immediately uncorked a 2-play scoring drive highlighted by a 58-yard catch-and-run to cut the deficit to 19-14.  After a Mojo 3-and-out, Waco regained the lead on a 32-yard TD strike to enjoy a 21-19 advantage by quarter’s end.

The four-yard touchdown run by Lara in the early stages of the final period gave Permian a lead they would not relinquish the remainder of the contest.  Mojo has now beaten Midway in all three meetings between the two teams.

Permian (1-1) will return to Ratliff Stadium next week to host former district foe Amarillo Tascosa (1-1) for homecoming.  Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.  The Panthers defeated the Rebels 13-12 in last year’s game at Bivins Stadium.
