Panthers Rip Rebels

Odessa, TX – Permian dominated all three phases of the game in a 43-6 non-district tilt with Amarillo Tascosa at Ratliff Stadium on Friday night.

The Panthers disposed of the Rebels in front of a large homecoming crowd from the onslaught.  Zykivion Bryant reeled off the opening kick return to paydirt.  Isaac Herrera racked up four touchdowns on the night, with three TD runs coming in the second quarter.

Facing fourth down on its own 39, Permian’s special team executed a perfect fake punt with Herrera being recipient of a direct snap.  He would ramble 61 yards.  Tascosa tried to answer and marched the ball down the field before the Mojo defense stepped up.  Parker Haynes picked off a pass at the goal line and returned it to near midfield.  Two plays later, Herrera uncorked a 58-yard end around to push the score to 21-0.

The Rebels were once again dealt misery when Kheeandre Aziz intercepted a Tascosa pass on the first play from scrimmage at the 27.  The Panthers quickly converted the miscue into another score when Herrera crossed the goal line from five yards out for a 29-0 Mojo lead.  The tally would hold up into the intermission.

Tascosa collected their only points of the contest on a Permian turnover early in the third quarter.  A mishandled punt return at the Mojo 3 cut the deficit to 29-6.  The Panthers were right back on the attack and produced a 7-play, 78-yard scoring drive, that was capped off with a Juzstyce Lara 4-yard TD run.  The Rebels found themselves on the short end of a 36-6 difference by quarter’s end.

Penalties marred much of the final quarter, but Permian managed to add a late touchdown when Herrera hauled in a short TD pass from Jakob Garcia.  The Panthers put together their best performance of the 2023 season in the 43-6 convincing win.

Permian will be back on the road when it plays Harker Heights in Killeen on September 15.  The Panthers defeated the Knights 28-27 in a come-from-behind victory in last year’s meeting at Ratliff.
