Cooper Routed In Homecoming Win

Odessa, TX – Running back Juzstyce Lara found the endzone four times on Friday night to lead Permian to a 56-28 Homecoming victory over Abilene Cooper in the final non-district game of the season.

On a night filled with pageantry and celebration, Hannah Douglas was unveiled as the 2022 Permian Homecoming Queen during the intermission.  In the meantime, the Panthers generated bookend 21-point quarters in the first and fourth to keep the visiting Cougars up against the ropes.

Mojo jumped out to a 14-0 lead behind a six-yard run by Tabarie Jones and three-yarder by Lara.  On the ensuing kickoff, Cooper reeled off a 99-yard return to narrow the deficit to 14-7.  Permian regained the two-touchdown lead when quarterback Rodney Hall connected with JaQuan Richardson on a 65-yard TD catch-and-run to enjoy a 21-7 first quarter advantage.

The Cougars added two TD passes in the second stanza, while the Panthers sent Lara across the goal line on a short score.  The Black Cats adjourned to the locker room still in front 28-21 at halftime.

Permian missed an opportunity to add to its tally to open the second half.  Mojo marched the kickoff all the way down to the Cooper 1.  A mishandled snap was recovered by the Cougars in the endzone.  The Panthers would get the ball right back when Bryce Woody intercepted a Cooper pass at the 32. This time Lara would reach paydirt to push the score to 35-21.

The Cougars would convert another Mojo mishap later in the frame to draw to within a touchdown.  A 53-yard Cooper run made it 35-28 to end scoring in the quarter.  That’s as close as the game would get as Permian took over in the final 12 minutes.

Lara would collect his fourth rushing TD early in the quarter.  Hall would get into the act and add a 14-yard touchdown scamper, while Jonathan Viscaino scored from four yards out to cap the scoring in a 56-28 lopsided decision.

Permian (5-0) will take a week off before starting the District 2-6A slate of games.  The Panthers open district in the annual ‘Crosstown Showdown’ with Odessa High (3-2) on October 7 at Ratliff Stadium.  The Black Cats will be the designated visiting team and occupy the east side of the stadium.
