Panthers Collect Win Over Midland

Midland, TX – Despite turning the ball over three times, Permian managed to exit Grande Communications Stadium with a 34-23 win over Midland High in Friday night’s District 2-6A clash.

On the opening kickoff, the Panthers experienced their first turnover when the fumble was recovered at the 44-yard line.  It would take six plays for the Bulldogs to gain a quick 7-0 lead.  Permian would settle in and produce a 10-play, 59-yard scoring drive, capped by a short TD run by Rodney Hall to make it a 7-6 ballgame.  On the next possession, Hall reeled off a 74-yard run to setup Juzstyce Lara’s short touchdown run to give the visiting Panthers at 13-7 first quarter lead.

Permian would add a touchdown and Midland High a field goal in the second quarter.  Brian Mahaffey found the endzone after getting open on down the left sideline for a 21-yard reception.  It capped off a 73-yard scoring drive that took seven plays for a 20-7 Mojo lead.  The Panthers would again cough up the ball, which the Bulldogs managed to convert into a 25-yard field goal as the clock ran out on the first half.  Permian had to settle with a 20-10 halftime lead.

Coming out of the intermission, the Mojo defense forced a three-and-out to open the third quarter. The Panthers would put together a 15-play, 70-yard scoring drive to push the deficit to 27-10. That would come when they converted a fourth-and-19. Hall connected with JaQuan Richardson on a 27-yard touchdown pass for the lone score of the quarter.

The Bulldogs would take advantage of yet another Mojo miscue early in the fourth quarter.  The pigskin would hit the turf at midfield, where it would be gobbled up and taken into the endzone to narrow the difference to 27-17.  Permian burned some clock on the next set of downs by executing a 13-play, 64-yard drive with Hall crossing the goal line on a short TD run.  Midland High matched that touchdown but it was too little too late in the 34-23 Mojo win.

Hall finished the night completing all eight of his passes for 147 yards and rushing for another 113 yards. Lara rushed for 106 yards off of 16 carries.  Salazar was responsible for three receptions for 51 yards, while Mahaffey had two catches for 33 yards.

The Panthers (3-1, 6-2) will be back in Ratliff Stadium next week as they host San Angelo Central in another District 2-6A match-up.  The Bobcats (2-1, 4-3) were idle this week.
