Mojo Casts Spell On Midland High

Odessa, TX – In the final home district game at Ratliff Stadium, the Black Cats cast their spell on Midland High in a 42-14 thumping on this Friday the 13th.  The victory punches the Class 6A playoff ticket for the Panthers.

Permian continued the one-two offensive punch – with Harper Terry and Shy Stephens-Deary doing damage through the air, while Andy Castillo took care of the ground game – to combine for more than 500 yards of offense.

After holding the Bulldogs to a quick three-and out to open the game, the Panthers drew first blood on a 35-yard strike from Terry to Stephens-Deary to cap a 6-play, 68-yard drive. Terry called his own number from three yards out on the next set of downs for another score.  The short field was a result of the Mojo defense blocking a Midland High punt.  Permian held a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

A holding penalty negated a 23-yard touchdown to open the second frame.  Not to be denied, Castillo crossed the goal line from four yards out three plays later to extend the lead.  A 51-yard TD dagger by Terry to Stephens-Deary was answered with a 6-play, 76-yard drive by the Bulldogs to spoil the shutout.  Castillo found the endzone a second time to send the teams to the locker room with the Panthers owning a 35-7 lead.

The Mojo offense scored on all of its five full possessions in the first half, with a sixth possession simply used to run-out the final few ticks to intermission.

In the third stanza, Terry and Stephens-Deary hooked up for a third touchdown effort on a 7-yard slant into the endzone.  The series would consist of 10 plays that covered 80 yards.  Midland High tried to duplicate the scoring drive and made their way into Mojo territory, but Amarion Garrett picked off an ill-advised pass at the Permian 12 to snuff out the threat late in the quarter.

An exchange of fumbles marred the fourth quarter early.  Kayden Baze recovered a high bad snap, but the Panthers failed to cash in.   The ensuing turnover set the Bulldogs up to add the game’s final points on a 64-yard TD pass to Daniel Garcia, his second TD of the game.

Rodney Hall led all rushers with 102 yards from eight carries.  Terran Limuel finished with 89 yards, and Terry followed with 79. Stephens-Deary topped all receivers with 92 yards from three receptions.

Permian will travel to San Angelo next Friday or the ‘Catfight on the Concho’, a much anticipated district showdown between the Panthers and Central Bobcats.  It will be the District 2-6A finale for the Panthers, while the Bobcats will have to travel to Midland Lee on November 27.  All three teams have eyes on the district bell.  A win will give Mojo the upper hand in any potential tie-breaking scenarios.
