With a 28-14 victory over Aldine, the Panthers secured the 1989 Class 5A State Champion title on Saturday afternoon in Texas Stadium. They have also been named National Champions by sports television giant ESPN.
Permian Hands Lee District Loss
Midland, TX — On a damp Thursday night, turnovers came by the bucketful. The District 4-5A battle between Permian and Midland Lee remained scoreless through one half of football. It was the Panthers that pulled out a 13-7 win at Memorial Stadium.
Permian Takes State In Second Half
Irving, TX — Trailing 19-7 at the half, Permian shut down Port Arthur Jefferson’s high-powered offense to claim a 28-19 decision in the 1980 Class 5A State Championship at Texas Stadium. Permian slapped 21 unanswered point on the scoreboard in the second half.
Second Verse Same As First
Irving, TX — For the second straight year, Plano stood in the way of Permian playing for the Class 4A State Championship. In 1977, the Wildcats knocked the Panthers out of the playoffs in the Semifinal Round, 3-0. The difference of a field goal again halted a Mojo State Final appearance in the 6-3 loss at Texas Stadium on Saturday.
Season Ends On Lone Field Goal
Lubbock, TX — Permian entered the contest undefeated at 13-0. The Panthers finished the game leading every statistical category. However, a Plano first quarter field goal was good enough to claim a 3-0 win in the Class 4A State Semifinal game at Jones Stadium.
