It was more than Casper that made an appearance for Halloween in Wolfforth. A sluggish first half had Permian trailing Frenship at the intermission. In the second half, the Black Cats made themselves known and slapped 24 points on the board.
After the opening Tigers possession stalled near midfield, the Panthers engineered a 8-play, 56-yard scoring drive. Gavin Black scored his first of three touchdowns on a short TD run to put the Black Cats up 7-0. The senior running back finished the night with 169 yards rushing. The Hub City Kitties answered six plays later to even the tally. A pair of punts would complete the first quarter with a 7-7 draw.
Permian coughed up the ball deep at its own 8 yard line in the second stanza, but two plays later a Frenship running back fumbled away the ball and the Panthers were right back in business at the 11. A lengthy possession ensued and produced a drive that got all the way down to the Tiger 12. An intercepted pass into the left side of the endzone squashed the scoring effort.
It took all of three plays for Frenship to take its first lead on a 58-yard TD pass midway into the quarter for a 14-7 edge. Permian was able to knot the game at 14-14 when Black ripped off a 40-yard touchdown run with 3:40 until the half. Facing 4th-and-1, Black broke through the line and drifted to the left sideline where he went untouched down the field to reach paydirt. The Tigers kicked a short field goal right before the half to send the teams to the locker room with the Panthers trailing 17-14.
The Black Cats, as they’ve done all season, came out and took control in the second half. Kayden Vickers took over for Jakob Garcia, who injured his leg right before the half. The junior quarterback, in just his second snap in the contest, unleashed a bomb to give Permian a lead it’d never relinquish the remainder of the game. Vickers connected with Cason Nabarette on a 73-yard catch-and-run touchdown. Iker Munoz ended the third quarter with a 39-yard field goal to give Mojo a 24-17 lead.
Black reached paydirt a third time early in the final period when he bulled his way across the goal line from 11 yards out. Cameron Mattingly got into the act when he intercepted a Quaid Ferris pass near midfield. The senior defensive back rambled 56 yards for a pick-6 to push the score to 38-17. It’s the third interception for Mattingly this season. Frenship managed to score with 10 seconds left in regulation, but the Black Cats are the ones celebrating this Halloween with the 38-25 district victory.
The Panthers racked up 487 yards of total offense, while the Tigers had 466 yards. Gavin Black finished the night rushing for 169 yards with three touchdowns. Garcia went 8-of-15 passing for 155 yards, while Vickers completed six of his nine passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. The junior QB could see an expanded role in the weeks ahead.
The win guarantees Permian at least a share of the District 2-6A title. The Black Cats (4-0, 8-1) will host Midland High (1-3, 2-7) next Friday for the final game of the regular season. A victory will give the Panthers outright sole possession of the District Gold Ball. The Bulldogs lost the Midland Legacy 33-21 tonight. Kickoff at Ratliff Stadium will be at 7:30 p.m.
Playoff discussion will follow the Midland game. Sorry. Stay focused. One game at a time.
