Mojo Family Suffers Great Loss

Odessa/Midland, TX – For many Permian fans, the name Dal Watson has been remembered as a talented standout athlete that left his mark in the Mojo Football history books.  Sadly, he passed away on August 25 at the age of 58.

Watson was a team captain and 1985 Permian graduate that led the football team to a 15-0-1 season record (7-0 in district) in 1984.  It was a season that witnessed Mojo claim a share of the Texas High School Class 5A State Championship title.  In the contest, the Black Cats and Beaumont French battled to a 21-21 tie.

Watson was a two-way starter as a middle linebacker on defense and running back on offense.  He was selected to the Texas High School All-State football team.  His impressive 30-touchdown mark stood for 40 years as the Panthers’ top single-season rusher.  He also rushed for 1,609 yards (16 games) in 1984, which is currently 14th in Mojo’s all-time single-season rushing record.

After graduating from Permian, Dal continued his education and athletic career at Texas Tech.  He lettered as a Red Raider linebacker from 1985 to 1988, and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1989.

Watson was a big supporter of sports in the Permian Basin. He began officiating football in the early 90s, and was a member of a college crew from 1995 to 2001.  He was selected to the Texas High School Class 5A State Championship officiating crew in 2001.  He also worked the TAPPS Division II State title game this past season.

As a member of TASO (Texas Association of Sports Officials), Watson’s officiating wasn’t limited to just football.  He was also well respected as a Permian Basin Chapter baseball umpire and basketball referee.

Watson’s dedication to the sports community reached beyond officiating.  He was the broadcast voice for Midland Christian’s football and basketball programs from 2010-17.  Watson served on the Midland Parks and Recreation Commission.  He has been president and owner of a successful Midland insurance company since 2019.

To say Dal Watson will be sorely missed would be such an understatement.  His absence will certainly leave a noticeable void in our sports community.  Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5 at the First Baptist Church in Midland.
