Permian failed to break the ‘Metroplex Hex’ for the seventh time in the past decade under head coach Jeff Ellison. The last time the Black Cats made it to the third round of the state playoffs was back in 2014. Euless Trinity knocked Permian out in the following Regional Round game.
Tonight’s 58-point loss is the largest playoff defeat in the football program’s history, dating back to 1959. The previous ‘record’ of 53 came last year at the hands of these same Panthers from North Crowley (63-10). Prior to that, a 43-point defeat came in 2019 against Arlington Martin (71-28) in the same Area Round of the state playoffs.
On a positive note, another record was set during tonight’s contest. Junior running back Gavin Black is now the school’s top single season rushing leader with 2,331 yards. Standout athlete Shawn Crow has held the record with 2,288 yards ever since the 1986-87 season.
North Crowley opened the contest with a 28-point opening first quarter, and added another 21 in the second stanza for a 49-0 halftime lead. It wouldn’t get much better for Permian in the second half.
Trailing 65-0 after three quarters of play, Mojo was able to finally get on the scoreboard. A 23-yard scamper by Black would account for one of a pair of touchdown runs in the fourth period. John Paul Uranga had a 70-yard TD run midway in the quarter.
The 2024 season ends with the Black Cats touting an 8-4 record overall. Permian finished district with a 2-3 mark to earn a fourth place playoff spot. Mojo was undefeated at 7-0… before losing to Midland Legacy. The train seemed to derail from there, with back-to-back losses to Frenship and Midland High to end district.
