Permian Suffers Non-District Loss

Odessa, TX – Permian found itself in unfamiliar territory in Friday’s non-district game, not only trailing but getting shutout in the first half. Amarillo Tascosa handed the Panthers their first loss of the season in a 40-21 decision at Ratliff Stadium.

Not even members from the 1991 State Champion team in attendance could muster up enough Mojo to push the Panthers to victory. Tam Hollingshead, Kade King, and the distinguished former players were there to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of Permian’s last state title.

It became evident early, the Tascosa coaching staff had done their homework for the meeting.  The opening quarter quickly became a defensive battle.  Midway into the period, it would be the Rebels’ defense that setup the game’s first score after they blocked a Mojo punt. The short field would eventually result in a 3-yard fumble return into the endzone for a 6-0 lead.

Tascosa added another score in the second quarter.  The 7-play, 67-yard drive was capped off by a short touchdown run.  The Rebels would complete the two-point conversion to enjoy at 14-0 lead that would carry into the intermission.

The second half would be an exchange possessions and scoring drives, but the Panthers were unable to make up any ground.  Tascosa opened the half with a quick 2-play score behind runs of 40 and 35 yards.  Permian finally got on the board after a 9-play, 82-yard drive found the ball outside the goal line.  A fumble dribbled into the endzone and Devin Pierce came up with the pigskin to cut the deficit to 21-7.

The Rebels answered with another 2-play drive to up the tally to 27-7.  Zach Wheeler capped off an 11-play scoring drive to end the third quarter with the Panthers trailing by 13.  Permian managed to add another touchdown in the fourth quarter, while Tascosa added two more TD’s for a 40-21 Mojo loss.

Tristan Johnson led all Mojo rushers, but was limited to only 35 yards on seven carries.  Rodney Hall finished with 23 ground yards from 19 carries.  He added another 141 yards through the air.  Ja’Quan Richardson was the primary target, catching five passes for 114 yards.

Permian’s non-district finale next Friday is again up in the air. Originally, the Panthers were to host UANL Mexico for homecoming night. That was scrubbed due to COVID travel restrictions across the border.  It was then announced that a substitution game against Stellar Prep (Hayward, CA) was to take its place. That apparently is not going to happen. Stellar is scheduled to play Clayton Valley Charter (Concord, CA) on September 17.
