Homecoming Win Over Midland Lee

Odessa, TX – The annual district meeting between Permian and Midland Lee lived up to its usual clash of titans. After owning a 20-17 halftime edge, the Panthers ambushed the Rebels in the second half to claim a 55-44 victory at Ratliff Stadium on Homecoming night.

Andrea Davila was announced as the 2020 Homecoming Queen, while Donovan Pando was announced as King.  A blocked punt deep in the Rebels’ territory was all the Panthers needed to spark a dominate fourth quarter.  Permian unleashed a 29-point quarter following Peyton Sharp’s block.

The Black Cats got off to a good start, when they opened the contest with a 9-play, 75-yard scoring drive.  After methodically moving down field with eight consecutive running plays, Terran Limuel nabbed a 33-yard TD pass from Harper Terry for the quarter’s only score.  The Rebels fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but Permian was unable to capitalize on the miscue.

Lee’s next possession covered 93 yards and took 14 plays, before Makhilyn Young scored from four yards out to knot the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter.  Limuel set the Panthers up with great field position when he uncorked a 67-yard kickoff return to the Lee 29. On the second play from scrimmage, Lucas Salazar broke free and reached paydirt on a 29-yard TD run.  The extra point failed, leaving the tally at 13-7.  Lee took a 14-13 lead when Young found the goal line on a 9-yard TD run.

A failed onside kick gave the Panthers the ball near midfield. Five plays later, Terry would score on a 14 yard trot in what would be his first of four rushing touchdowns. After an exchange of three-and-outs, the Rebels would be forced to settle with a field goal to cut the deficit to 20-17.  The district rivals would take that score to the locker rooms.

Lee received the second half kickoff and added back-to-back scores, in what looked like trouble for Permian.  The Rebels opened up their passing game and took the lead early in the third period. A 13-yard TD pass from Mikey Serrano to Shemar Davis was followed by three Mojo plays and a punt.  Lee ran nine plays from midfield before Young scored his third TD to give the Rebels a 31-20 advantage.

An exchange of big play runs left the Panthers trailing by 11.  Terry rambled 75 yards on the first play from scrimmage, but Young reciprocated with a 69-yarder of his own.  Both teams would fail to move the chains on the next set of downs, which led to Sharp’s blocked punt.  Taking over at the Lee 14, the Mojo offense watched Tristan Johnson power his way into the endzone to pull the Black ‘N White to within five points at 38-33.

With momentum back to the home side, the defense rose and forced a three-and-out to setup shop for Permian at the 30-yard line. On a third-and-10, Shy Stephens-Deary worked into wide open space to convert a 69-yard catch-and-run into a 41-38 Mojo lead.  The Panthers wanted more.  Unable to make headway, Lee was forced to give the ball back.  A short punt resulted in Permian taking possession near midfield.  Three plays later, Terry was back on that horse – this time on a 42-yard gallop to push the deficit to 48-38 with five minutes remaining in regulation.

Terry had one more touchdown run in him, and would hammer in the final nail on a 25-yard QB keeper. The Rebels managed to add another TD with under a minute to play to cap the scoring effort trailing 55-44. Terry finished the night with 283 yards – 177 rushing and 106 passing – and accounted for four rushing scores and two more through the air.  Johnson racked up 68 yards from 17 carries, and Andy Castillo added another 40 ground yards with six touches.

The Panthers are scheduled to travel to Abilene (0-1) next Friday for another district game.  Permian (1-0) plays Abilene High at P.E. Shotwell Stadium with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
