The Panthers were back on the road in another long-distance travel trip. Opening drives for both teams suffered an abundance of penalties. Tascosa was first to score, when Harper Terry was pressured and threw a Pick-6 from his own goal line. It would be the first of two interceptions returned for points in the first half alone. A 9-yard touchdown run by Logan Nance gave the Rebels a 21-0 lead midway into the second quarter.
On the next possession, Rodney Hall reeled off a 43-yard scamper to breathe some positive life into the Mojo offensive effort. Receiver Shy Stephens-Deary hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Terry to cap off a 5-play, 75-yard scoring drive. It would also get the Panthers on the board and cut the deficit to 21-6 at the intermission.
Tascosa took all of five rushing plays to open the third quarter with more points. A 21-yard trot into the endzone by B.T. Daniel extended the Rebel lead to 28-6. The Panthers were able to answer with a scoring drive of their own, covering 74 yards in seven plays. Stephens-Deary and Terry hooked up for a second TD strike, this time from 31 yards out.
Just when it looked like Mojo would step back into the contest, Major Everhart rolled coast-to-coast on the ensuing kickoff for a 95-yard return. On the following set of downs, Terry coughed up the ball as Permian rested just outside the redzone. The Rebels took full advantage of the Mojo mishap with a 4-play drive that capped off by a 67-yard TD run by L’Travion Brown. Another Permian interception, followed by a Tascosa fumble, set up Cade Tschauner’s touchdown nab in the back of the endzone to complete an active third quarter and leave the Panthers trailing 40-18.
The Black Cats were unable to make up any ground in the final 12 minutes of play to absorb the first loss of the season and close out the non-district slate. Terran Limuel led rushers with 72 yards, followed by Hall with 61. Stephens-Deary led all receivers with 66 yards from three catches. Permian committed nine penalties, while giving up five turnovers – four interceptions and a fumble – in the loss.

Permian will be hosting another group of Rebels next week as Midland Lee visits Ratliff Stadium in the home district opener for the Panthers. Lee, the district’s only remaining unbeaten, defeated Belton (26-7) tonight and Tascosa (31-21) the previous week. It will be Homecoming Night for the Black -N-White on October 16.
