Bi-District: Permian Shuts Out Coronado

ODESSA — After jumping out to a dominating lead, Permian wasted no time in disposing of El Paso Coronado in the Bi-District 42-0 shutout win on Friday.  The Panthers advance to the Area Round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

Permian recorded its first shutout victory in the state playoffs since beating Lewisville 37-0 in 1994.  The Panthers handed the T-Birds a 50-17 thumping last year in the Bi-District Round of the playoffs.

The Panthers took the open kickoff and reeled off an 11-play, 88-yard scoring drive.  Williams capped off the drive with a short touchdown run from two yards out.  Justin Hammond hauled in an 18-yard TD pass from Peyton Powell on the next series to increase the lead to 14 points.  Christian Tschauner and the Mojo “No Fly Zone” defense got into the act on Coronado’s next possession.  An intercepted pass led to Tyler Ramage doing the damage when he caught a 24-yard TD pass from Hammond to give Permian a 21-0 first quarter lead.

The Mojo defense continued to flex its muscle in the second quarter, while the offense added two more scores.  First, Chase Stell picked off an Ethan Arroyo pass and returned it 40 yards to setup the Panthers at the Coronado 43 yard line.  Five plays later, Hammond found the endzone from three yards out midway into the quarter.  Christian Rodriguez and Kaden Horrell hooked up on the next series of downs to extend the lead to 35-0 on an eight yard TD strike.

Permian scored the game’s final points in the third quarter.  Mojo had a chance to add more but the T-Birds nabbed a Rodriguez pass just outside the goal line to spoil the scoring drive.  The Panther defense took care of limiting the T-Birds  to doing anything with the ball.  Mojo went on an 8-play scoring drive that was capped off by a Dominique Nelson’s 1-yard plunge to finish off the 42-0 shutout victory.

The Mojo defense held Coronado to under 100 yards of total offense to continue their dominance displayed this season.  Hammond finished the night with 79 yards rushing and 23 receiving, while Williams rushed for 78 yards on 14 carries.  Ramage recorded 53 yards receiving, and Horrell had three catches for 23 yards.

The Panthers advance to the Area Round of the Class 6A playoffs and will play Arlington Lamar next Friday at Wildcat Stadium on the campus of Abilene Christian University (located at ACU Drive and E Ambler Ave).  Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m.
