Air Vickers sparked an explosive first half as Kayden Vickers carved up the Dragons’ defensive backfield. The Mojo quarterback tossed three touchdown passes in the first quarter for a quick 21-0 lead. This included TD passes to Aaron Navarrete for nine yards, Malachi Mendoza for 27, and Jace Thompson for a 17-yard touchdown strike.
A wild, penalty-heavy second quarter slowed the game down to a crawl—with both teams combining for 15 halftime flags—but the Panthers’ defensive front stood like a concrete wall, sending Mojo into the locker room with a commanding 21-0 cushion.
The halftime festivities included the crowning of Phoebe Rubalcalba as the 2026 Permian Homecoming Queen.
Permian’s backfield put the hammer down in the third quarter. Cayden Taylor punched in a brutal 5-yard scamper at the 8:56 mark, and Josh Curry put an exclamation point on the night with an explosive 18-yarder to push the lead to 35-0.
The Dragons ruined the Mojo shutout with just one second remaining in the third quarter. In one of the few bright spots for Compass Prep, Omar Sanad reeled in a 46-yard TD pass… but the game was already well in hand.
With a 35-7 lead firmly secured, the Black Cats began flooding the turf with secondary personnel to gain invaluable varsity experience. In the fourth quarter, junior quarterback Eric Aguilera engineered a beautiful 7-play scoring drive, finding sophomore Dae Dae McDowell on a 24-yard touchdown pass. Back-up kicker Jayden Lopez drilled the extra point to make it 42-7.
The Dragons added a late strike on a 75-yard bomb, but Mojo closed the door for good. Iker Munoz, who went a perfect 5-for-5 on PATs, blasted a 43-yard field goal through the uprights with 1:10 remaining, and the Mojo defense officially ended the game by pinning the Dragons on their own 1-yard line as time expired.
The Panthers produced 337 yards of total offense, while the Dragons finished the night with 189. Vickers went 14-of-18 for 161 passing yards, including three touchdowns. McDowell hauled in six catches for 108 yards and a TD reception. Taylor finished the night was 55 yards rushing with a touchdown.
Permian (5-0) will have a short week, hosting Camden High (from New Jersey) on October 1. Our weekly preview will post on Tuesday.
