Tonight’s contest marks the third playoff loss in four years hosted at the Abilene stadium. The Black Cats lost to Euless Trinity (28-17) in 2021 and to North Crowley (63-10) in 2023 in this same Shotwell Stadium.
The Mojo defense tried to set the tempo early and limited Allen to one first down on the opening drive. The Permian offense took over near midfield, but was unable to move the ball and had to punt it back.
The second Eagles possession produced the quarter’s only points on a 10-play, 78-yard scoring drive. Allen would take the 7-0 advantage and expand that lead in the second frame.
Powered by a 28-point second quarter, the state-ranked Eagles enjoyed a 35-0 halftime lead over the Panthers. Permian had six possessions that each consisted of three plays and a punt in the first half. It wasn’t until the final set of downs of the second quarter that the Panthers gained their first 1st down. Meanwhile, Allen scored every time they possessed the ball in the second stanza.
While Permian opened the third quarter with another three-and-out, Allen ran three plays and added another touchdown to the score for a 42-0 lead.
The Panthers did score twice in the second half. Cayden Taylor had a nice touchdown run of 28 yards midway into the third quarter, and Cason Nabarrette caught a short TD pass late in the final period. Meanwhile, Allen added another score late in the third and another in the fourth for the 56-13 season ender.
Gavin Black finished with 127 yards rushing from 17 carries. Nabarrette had six catches for 39 yards and the touchdown, while Aaron Navarrete had three receptions for 30 yards.
The loss snaps an impressive 11-game win streak, as the Black Cats finish with an 11-2 season record. Permian ends the year named Bi-District and Area Round Champions. The Panthers also claimed the District 2-6A title. Several Mojo players are being named to the All-District selection list, that will be officially released next week.
