Permian went on offense first and engineered a 10-play, 78-yard scoring drive that was capped off on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jakob Garcia to Cameron Mattingly. Tascosa answered with an 18-play, 75-yard scoring drive that would eat up the remaining clock of the first quarter and leak over into the second period.
Sparks would fly in the second frame. Junior kicker/punter Iker Munoz would get things started by nailing a 45-yard field goal early in the quarter for a 10-7 edge. The Rebels responded with sustaining 12-play drive that gave the hosts their only lead in the game.
The visiting Panthers regained a lead they’d never relinquish. Following a 48-yard catch-and-run from Garcia to Cason Nabarette on 3rd-and-11, Cayden Hernandez completed a 42-yard halfback pass to sophomore receiver Aaron Navarette for a touchdown to close out the first half. Permian owned a narrow 17-14 halftime advantage at the intermission.
Defense and turnovers ruled the second half. Tascosa opened the quarter fumbling on the third play from scrimmage. Permian was unable to capitalize on that miscue when a 36-yard field goal attempt was missed. After forcing a Rebel three-and-out on the next possession, the Panthers ran all of five plays before having a field goal attempt blocked.
On the next set of downs, the Tascosa offense ran out of steam and turned the ball over at the Permian 39. The Black Cats would give the pigskin back two plays later, when they coughed up the ball near midfield. The Mojo defense forced yet another three-and-out, leaving the score unblemished at 17-14 at the end of the quarter.
Permian’s first possession of the final stanza went nowhere, but a 52-yard punt by Munoz pinned Tascosa deep at their own 1 yard line. The Rebels ran 12 plays to get past midfield before fumbling again on a bad pitch. This time the Black Cats would cash in. The Panthers utilized six plays to march 56 yards down the field for another touchdown. Garcia and Navarette hooked up on a 6-yard scoring strike for a 23-14 lead with three minutes left in the game.
In desperation, Tascosa responded with a scoring drive of its own to narrow the difference to two points. With time running out, a failed onside kick was recovered by Nabarette to seal the Rebels’ fate. Permian drained the final 84 seconds off of the clock for the 23-21 road victory.
Garcia threw for 158 yards and had another 67 on the ground, while Gavin Black finished the night rushing for 111 yards on 13 carries. Navarette recorded eight receptions for 88 yards, including two catches for touchdowns. Defensively, Mattingly and Alijah Green each came away with a fumble recovery.
The Black Cats (3-1) will host the Cajon Cowboys (2-1) from San Bernardino, California next Friday night for Homecoming at Ratliff Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. It will be the final non-district game on the 2025 schedule.
