Permian Celebrates Homecoming Win

Odessa, TX – Permian utilized a strong second half to send the Cajon Cowboys back to San Bernardino, California with a loss.  The Panthers claimed a 36-25 Homecoming victory at Ratliff Stadium on Friday night.

After falling behind by as much as 19-3, the Black Cats fought back to even the score by the time intermission rolled around.  Cajon rode big plays in the first quarter, including the opening possession of the game.  It took all of three plays for the Cowboys to get on the scoreboard.  A 67-yard touchdown pass gave the visitors a quick 6-0 lead.

Permian responded with a 10-play drive that was halted in the redzone.  A 29-yard field goal by Iker Munoz narrowed the gap to 6-3.  Back came Cajon.  This time a 78-yard catch-and-run capped off another three play scoring drive to have the Panthers trailing 12-3 after one quarter of play.

The Cowboys pushed their lead to 16 points, opening the second frame with a 8-play, 55-yard scoring drive.  From there, the Permian offense produced two TD drives capped with two-point conversions to knot the tally at 19-19.

Iniubong John’s pass catching abilities assisted in cutting the deficit to 19-11, when he hauled in a 7-yard TD strike.  A muffed punt on the next series set up the Black Cats at the Cajon 47.  Aaron Navarette caught a TD pass of 14 yards from Jakob Garcia, and Cason Nabarette completed the 2-point conversion to send the teams to the locker room tied.

The halftime festivities included the crowning of Betty Saenz as the 2025 Permian Homecoming Queen.

The Panthers methodically took the second half kickoff down the field and into the redzone before coughing up the ball at the Cowboys 10.  The next Permian possession saw a 45-yard field goal attempt drift wide right.  Aided by a 55-yard run and 20-yard TD pass, Cajon regained its lead at 25-19.

The Black Cats rumbled right back. They were able to put together a 6-play, 64-yard touchdown drive to take their first lead of the night.  The Panthers now possessed a 26-25 edge to close out the third quarter.

It was all Permian in the final stanza.  A 52-yard TD drive was followed by a Noel Washington interception near midfield.  A 27-yard Munoz field goal extended the lead to the final homecoming score of 36-25.

The Panthers produced 460 yards of total offense, while the Cowboys finished the night with 380.  Garcia went 18-of-26 for 253 passing yards, including two touchdowns.  John hauled in five catches for 68 yards and a TD reception.  Munoz recorded two field goals of 29 and 27 yards, plus two after touchdown extra points (PAT’s).
