Permian Drops Season Opener To Plano

Frisco, TX – Plano got the better of Permian in the fifth annual Jerry Jones Classic in Ford Center at The Star.  After trailing 7-3 at the half, the Panthers fell to the Wildcats 27-17 in the nationally televised season opener.

Permian and Plano opened the 2025 season at the Dallas Cowboys practice headquarters, with each digging into their bag of tricks early.  The Wildcats attempted an onside kick to begin the game.  It was unsuccessful, which gave the Panthers great field position near midfield.  Returning the trickery favor, the Black Cats pulled out a flanker pass that was hauled in and advanced to the 3-yard line.  The receiver fumbled and Plano dodged an early dagger.

The Wildcats drove down the field in eight plays but missed a 32-yard field goal attempt to leave the contest scoreless.  Permian responded on its second possession with a 15-play scoring drive, capped off by a 30-yard field goal by Iker Munoz early in the second quarter.

Plano took its first lead on the following possession when CJ Smith connected with Kaedyn Brown on a 55-yard TD strike to make it a 7-3 tally.  The Wildcats threatened again in the second quarter at the Panther 22.  Smith attempted a pass into the endzone, but Cameron Mattingly nabbed the pigskin to end the Plano drive.  Permian trailed 7-3 at halftime.

The third quarter witnessed an exchange of scores – two from the Wildcats and one from the Panthers.  Plano took the opening drive of the second half  77 yards and scored to extend its lead to 14-3.  Not to be outdone, Permian mounted a scoring drive of its own with Gavin Black punching it in from five yards out.  A pass from Jakob Garcia to Iniubong John completed the two-point conversion to narrow the deficit to 14-11.

On the next play from scrimmage, Plano’s Chance Culley broke free on a 76-yard TD run to end the quarter with the Wildcats up 20-11.  Plano added another touchdown midway into the final stanza, but Permian persevered and answered with a 66-yard TD strike from Garcia to Aaron Navarette.  The Wildcats came away with the 27-17 win.

The Black Cats will host El Paso Eastlake next Thursday night at Ratliff Stadium for their home opener.
