The Rebels were able to knot the contest at 48-48 with 3:22 remaining on the clock. After receiving the ensuing kickoff, the Panthers started the game-winning drive at the 25. Permian reeled off 10 plays to get the ball down to the Legacy 9-yard line with just four ticks left in regulation. Two time outs later, Iker Munoz lined up and booted a 26-yard field goal that split the uprights for the Mojo victory.
The rivalry provided 48 minutes of back-and-forth excitement throughout the night. Permian ran all of two plays before Legacy intercepted a pass and returned it 44 yards for the first score on a pick-6. The Black Cats came right back and executed a 6-play, 51-yard touchdown drive, capped off on a Jakob Garcia to Cayden Hernandez pass to knot the contest at 7-7.
The Rebels scored late in the quarter for a 14-7 advantage, but Garcia and Hernandez would hook up again on a 16-yard TD to even the game at 14-14. Nata Cardoza picked off a Lee pass near midfield and four plays later Garcia hit Alexx Cruz on a 36-yard strike to put the Panthers up 21-14 at the end of the opening quarter.
Legacy began the second stanza with a field goal, but Permian orchestrated a 5-play, 52-yard scoring drive with Gavin Black bulling his way into the endzone for the first of four touchdowns he’d score in the game. The Rebels would score back-to-back TDs on a 94-yard run and 72-yard pass reception to take a 31-27 lead. It would take all of four plays before Black was crossing the goal line to give Mojo a 34-31 halftime edge.
Legacy opened the third frame with a successful onside kick, but the drive stalled at the Permian 32-yard line. Midway into the quarter the Rebels found paydirt on a 6-yard TD pass to go ahead 38-34. The visiting Panthers regained the lead on a 19-yard scamper by Black for Mojo to lead 41-38 to close out the third period.
The Black Cats would extend their lead two minutes into the final quarter when Black reached paydirt for the fourth time, this time from three yards out for a 48-38 Permian lead. The Rebels narrowed the deficit on the next possession with a 24-yard field goal. The Panthers still led by a touchdown until Legacy compiled an 8-play, 88-yard scoring drive to knot the game at 48-48 with 3:22 left on the clock.
Permian’s final drive set up the 26-yard Munoz kick for the Panthers to now sit atop District 2-6A unbeaten with two games left in the regular season. Lee and Frenship are now tied for second with matching 2-1 district records.
The Panthers racked up 578 yards of total offense, while the Rebels had 434 yards.
