Executing all three phases of the game and cutting down on mental mistakes equals collecting a decisive “dubya” on the road. Entering the contest, Abilene High was undefeated and state ranked in Class 5A. Permian was looking to build on to last week’s 27-12 win over El Paso Eastlake.
The Panthers opened the game going three-and-out. The Eagles took advantage of the field position and put together a 4-play, 37-yard scoring drive for a 7-0 lead. The two teams exchanged punts the remainder of the quarter.
Permian looked on track to even the score early in the second stanza, but a fumble would end the drive on the 27-yard line. After forcing another Abilene punt, the Black Cars cranked out a 3-play, 55-yard scoring drive that would be capped off by Gavin Black midway in the quarter to knot the game at 7-7.
On the next possession, the Panthers took a 14-7 lead on a 4-yard Jakob Garcia keeper. A bad snap on an Eagles punt, deep in their own end of the field, led to Garcia connecting with Cameron Mattingly on a 4-yard strike for a Black Cat 21-7 buffer to end the first half.
The Mojo defense dished out a three-and-out to open the second half. Taking over near midfield, Permian had a 31-yard pass negated by a penalty and eventually had to settle with a long field goal…. a 54-yarder by Iker Munoz to push the advantage to 24-7.
The exchange of a pair of touchdowns filled the fourth period. Alexx Cruz hauled in a 25-yard pass for six, and Black added another short TD run. Kayden Vickers uncorked a 68-yard bomb to setup the final Black touchdown run.
Permian finished with 403 yards of total offense. Garcia completed 10-of-20 passes for 204 yards. Black had 87 rushing yards on 13 carries. Aaron Navarette recorded 98 yards receiving on four catches. Munoz was a perfect 5-for-5 in extra point attempts, plus the 54-yard field goal.
The Black Cats (2-1) will travel to Amarillo next Thursday night for a date with the Tascosa Rebels (2-1) at Dick Bivins Stadium.
