Local Talent Fills Coaching Spot

ODESSA – An Odessa native will fill the empty spot in the Permian coaching staff. Mason Munguia has been hired to fill the position vacated by Ron King. Coach King announced his retirement earlier this Spring.

Munguia will join the coaches of two Permian sports – football and baseball. A 2006 graduate of Odessa High, Munguia coached at Midland High the past two seasons, and at his Alma Mater the four previous years. He also coached two years at Midland Christian. He graduated from the University of Texas – Permian Basin with a Bachelor’s Degree in History.

On the football field, he has been tasked with developing the outside linebackers. While at OHS, he coached outside linebackers, quarterbacks, and then wide receivers in that respective order. Munguia was the assistant offensive line and tight end coach his first year at MHS, and then he was the inside receivers coach this past season.

Munguia will also be a varsity assistant coach for the Mojo Baseball program. He played pitcher and infielder in baseball, and quarterback in football during his playing days at Odessa High.  He went on to play baseball at Odessa College.
