San Angelo Central Edges Permian In Catfight
Friday, October 21, 2016 10:50

ODESSA — Thanks to a strong first quarter, San Angelo Central jumped out to a 21-7 halftime lead over Permian on Friday night. The Panthers were unable to make up the difference in the second half to suffer a 28-14 District 2-6A loss at Ratliff Stadium.

Central took its first possession 23 yards for an early 7-0 lead. The Bobcats added another touchdown late in the first quarter on a 10-play, 67-yard drive that was capped off with a short TD run.

Midway into the second quarter, the Bobcats drove the distance of the field on a 14-play, 94-yard drive to extend their lead to 21-0. This time Permian was able to answer. Two costly penalties by Central gave Steve Steen and the Mojo offense the green light to reach paydirt. An 8-yard run by Steen got the Panthers on the scoreboard to trail 21-7 at the intermission.

Permian came out with more intensity in the second half. It became evident on the opening series in the third quarter. Central lost yardage on back-to-back plays before completing a short pass and punting the ball away. The Panthers took possession and three plays later faced 4th-and-4 near midfield. A fake punt from Tanner Adams to Preston Ellison not only picked up the first down but was good for a net gain of 40 yards and set-up the Mojo offense at the Central 10-yard line. Unfortunately, the drive stalled and Permian missed the 33-yard field goal attempt.

The Mojo defense came up huge on the third play of the next Bobcat drive when Tyson Banks intercepted Central quarterback Cal Vincent's pass at the Bobcat 45. It was Vincent's first thrown interception of the season. Permian took five plays to cover 55 yards to cut the San Angelo lead to seven. Steen connected with Hunter Wynne on a 20-yard TD to make it a 21-14 ballgame. The Bobcats ran two plays to end the third quarter near midfield.

Vincent threw passes of 16, 15, and 25 yards to open the fourth quarter and regain a two touchdown lead for Central. Permian looked on course to answer with points of their own.  The Bobcats intercepted a pass just outside the goal line and returned it to the 17, where Central would take over. Neither team could add to their scores and the Panthers suffered their fourth district loss of 2016.  Ed Williams led Permian rushers with 58 yards, followed by Steen with 43.  Hunter Hawkins had four receptions for 40 yards, Wynne finished with 34 yards from three catches, and Ellison had the one catch for 40 yards on the fake punt.

Permian will play visitors to Odessa High next Friday back here at Ratliff Stadium.  Both teams are 0-4 and the outcome will mean more than just cross-town bragging rights.  One will be able to enjoy being City Champions, while the other will be alone in the District 2-6A cellar.
