Permian Dishes Out 55-12 Lashing Of Bishop Timon
Thursday, September 15, 2016 10:21
ODESSA — Permian jumped out to a 35-12 halftime lead over Buffalo, New York's Bishop Timon-St. Jude on Thursday night's final non-district game. While Kasyn Armstrong was named Homecoming Queen, Mojo added another 20 second half points to post a 55-12 shellacking of the Tigers at Ratliff Stadium.
Bishop Timon's opening possession resulted in a fumble that was recovered by Preston Ellison and immediately converted into a quick seven points for the Panthers, just two plays later. Running back Ed Williams scampered 21 yards for an early 7-0 Mojo lead. Timon was able to answer back with a 14-play, 67-yard scoring drive, but a failed two-point conversion left the Tigers a point short of matching the score. Permian's second possession began at its own 24, and 11 plays later, the Panthers were knocking on the door at the Tigers' 4-yard line as the quarter came to an end.
First play of the second quarter, Kobe Robinson knifed his way into the endzone to cap the 12-play scoring drive to give the Panthers a 14-6 lead. The Tigers stayed in arm's reach by putting together a 9-play scoring drive of their own. Another two-point conversion failed and Permian maintained a 14-12 lead. Timon would never get any closer. On the next Mojo set of downs, it took all of three plays to go 72 yards, which included a 68-yard catch and run from Steve Steen to Hunter Hawkins to make it 21-12. On the next Timon possession, Matt Jones snagged an interception and Steen converted that into a 27-yard TD run. After the Mojo defense forced a three-and-out, Robinson returned a punt to the Tigers 24 and Steen found paydirt on a 24-yard touchdown run to give the Panthers a 35-12 halftime lead. The Panthers took the opening drive of the second half and faced a 4th-and-3 near midfield. Robinson busted into open field and rambled 39 yards down to the Tigers' 9. Williams would cap off the scoring drive on a 9-yarder to paydirt for a 41-12 lead. Again the Permian defense flexed its muscle and forced the Tigers to turn the ball over on downs on their own 36. Brother Miller would make Timon pay for it by unleashing a 36-yard TD run on the very next play. After an exchange of punts (which was Permian's first of the night), sophomore defensive back Toddrick Robinson nabbed his first varsity interception at the 28 and returned it to the Tigers' 8. A penalty backed the ball up to the 22, and two plays later Williams was back in the endzone for his third TD of the game. While there was no scoring in the last 12 minutes of the game, the fourth quarter was marred with repeated penalties. A total of 10 yellow hankies hit the turf in the final stanza of what was otherwise a lopsided second half of play. Winning the mental game includes staying disciplined and in control. The Panthers still walked away with a 55-12 homecoming victory to close out the non-district scheduled games. Williams led the Panthers in rushing with 127 yards on 15 carries, while Hawkins had three receptions for 82 yards. Steen threw for 97 yards, and rushed for another 56 in the win.
The "real games" begin next Friday, September 23 on the road. The Panthers (4-0 for the season, 0-0 in district) will travel to Peoples Bank Stadium to open district play against 2-6A foe Frenship Tigers (2-2 on the year, 0-0 in district). Kickoff is slated for 7:30.
**Editor's Note - Hats off to the Tigers in their effort. Sending 27 New York kids to play on both sides of the ball for four quarters in the West Texas heat took some guts. Have a safe trip home and good luck to you in your New York Monsignor Martin league.
