vs Lamar Vikings

November 23, 2018 @ 3:00 pm

Area Playoff in Abilene

Coach:  Laban DeLay (3rd season at Lamar)
2018 Record:  10-1 overall / 6-1 district

The Vikings lost their lone game of the year (so far) to undefeated 4-6A champion Arlington High (42-31) in the district finale at UTA’s Maverick Stadium.  They destroyed Mojo’s former district rival San Angelo Central (55-14) in Friday’s Bi-District game.  Similar to Permian’s opening round 42-0 playoff victory, the Vikes put the game away in the first half.

The Lamar offense presents a well-balanced attack.  The Vikings have been averaging 392 total yards a game, with 211 coming by rush and 181 yards coming by way of pass.  The offense is currently scoring an impressive 48.5 points per game.  The Vikes run a lot of play-action out of the shotgun.

Junior quarterback Jack Dawson (5’11” 190) is in his second year starting under center for Lamar. He has completed 58 percent of his passes this season, throwing 34 touchdowns, but also has 6 interceptions. The majority of his throws are in the 15 to 20 yard range.  Dawson also has 230 rushing yards from 57 carries.  He has a 59-yard pass recorded as longest to gauge his arm strength, and he runs the 40 in 4.6 seconds.

The Vikes leading rusher is speedster senior Jordan Williams (5’8″ 150).  He has over 1,600 ground yards and averages 9.6 yards a carry.  Williams racks up 157 yards a game and has scored 21 TDs.  The change of pace back is senior Cedric Davis (5’10” 180).  He has been gaining 5.2 yards a carry, and has 244 rushing yards on 47 carries.  Davis also has four catches for 20 yards.  In the latter part of the season, sophomore Caleb Phillips (5’11” 170) has come on as a compliment to the Lamar backfield.  He’s been averaging 6.7 yards per carry.

Junior Trevon West (6’0″ 170), senior Isaiah Neyor (6’3″ 195), and Cam Brady (6’2″ 175) are a fierce corp of over six-foot-tall Viking receivers.  West has accounted for 795 yards from 36 catches for an average of 22 yards per reception.  He has 15 touchdowns this season.  West is followed by Neyor, which has 30 receptions for 683 yards and 23 yards per catch.  Brady has 446 yards from 23 catches for an average 19.4 yards per reception.  The trio have speed and size that will test the Mojo linebackers and secondary frequently.  And what’s the best way to take a six foot receiver down… take their thighs and legs out from under them.

The Lamar defense has limited their opponents to only 16 points a game, and typically line-up in a modified 3-4 set.  Linebackers Jayvieon Moore (5’9″ 185) and James Douglas (6’1″ 185) both have 4.4 speed and lead the team in tackles.  Moore averages 13 tackles a game.  He has nine tackles-for-loss and six hurries.  Douglas has six tackles-for-loss and six hurries, and has recorded 39 tackles for the season.  Defensive ends Josiah Mercado (5’10” 210) and Russell Hunt (5’10” 205) do a good job of sealing the outside corners.

The Lamar defensive backfield is a stingy group of ball hawks.  Jaylen Nobles (5’10” 150), Jordan Polk (5’11” 175), and DeShawn Gaddie (6’0″ 170) play a solid game at all times.  If they possess any flaws, it would be overplaying the ball due to their hunger to force turnovers.  Nobles leads the crew with three interceptions.

The Panthers will need to jump on the Vikings early, as Lamar has grown accustomed to forcing opponents into playing “come-from-behind” ball.  Permian will need to stay disciplined and limit penalties.  Long sustaining scoring drives and ball control will play to Mojo’s advantage.  The Vikings prefer a “run-and-gun” fast-paced game.

In the four meetings between the Panthers and Vikings, Mojo won all of them.  Permian won… 35-7 (in 1977), 21-7 (in 1988), 21-10 (in 1989), and 25-7 (in 1991).  The Permian-Lamar game will be played at Wildcat Stadium on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
